National Geographic Music Series: Spain - Flamenco Passion and Gypsy Souls - Emerging from the throes of Spain's turbulent history is the passion of flamenco, and the majestic nature of the classical guitar. Spain's music is as elaborately textured as its past, and represents a country of multi-dimensional identity. This collection invites you to experience the music as it echoes the aural mosaic of Spanish antiquity. Researched and compiled by Executive Producer Stevan Pasero, this is one-of-a-kind album that accurately depicts the different genres of the regional music of Spain. If you think the music in Spain is limited to only flamenco, this CD will shatter those preconceptions. The uninitiated listener will be surprised that there are several languages and dialects represented on the album, all of which are native to Spain. It is refreshing to hear the celtic, Galician songs of northern Spain also represented on this compilation. The gaita (or bagpipe of northern Spain, in various incarnations) is even heard on the album, which is a wonderful treat. Also featured is the regional music of Madrid, Andalusian, Valencia, Canary Islands and Basque. The artwork is stunning, featuring a full color foldout with invaluable info, history, legends, timetables and more!

The richly emotional, sultry voiced soul singer is best known for her powerful rendition of Brenda Russell's "Get Here," which became an anthem for the Gulf War. The funky opening track, "Sweet Side of Life," has smooth jazz written all over it; it's cool (hardly mining the depth of where that voice can go) and just a bit gospel flavored, and features Paul Jackson, Jr. on guitar and a smoky sax solo by Gerald Albright. She turns the familiar "I Can't Live a Day Without You" into a resonant declaration of love. She shows optimism and bluesy hip hope sensibilities on "I Hope You Dance," wistful sorrow on the plaintive "Love Was Spoken Here" and a deep sense of spirituality on the worshipful ballad "In the Beginning." Executive Producers: Stevan Pasero and Don Boyer. Produced by: Ricky Peterson and Peter Wolf.

Featuring some of the best Latin musicians in the United States, Stevan Pasero produced and recorded this CD several years ago. Note: With its variety of foreign influences, the mambo, which means "conversation with the gods", is a Cuban-originated rhythm with a rich history. Distinctively different in its beat and with more syncopation than the rhumba, this Afro-Cuban dance genre was quite popular during the 1940s and became part of the big band sound of the 1950s. The mambo is currently enjoying a renewed popularity due to the number of films featuring this beloved dance. That enthusiasm is beautifully reflected here.
